This study aims to analyze the threat level of coal mining in Kalimantan to biodiversity by using a scoring technique. The result of this study shows that from 35 mining companies, 23 mining companies are in the high threat category, 10 in the moderate threat category, and 2 in the low threat category.
There are five species with critically endangered status, 33 species with endangered status, and 69 species with vulnerable status around the coal mining area.
In addition, there is a mangrove ecosystem with a total area of 135,430.05 Ha around the coal mining area. The mangrove ecosystem is a crucial ecosystem in supporting the life of biodiversity. The current condition shows that biodiversity in the mangrove ecosystem is under threat due to mining activities.
In addition, if mining activities aren’t under control, there will be a potential carbon sequestration loss of 245,028.37 tons C/year. Because of that, the presence of coal mining can hinder Indonesia from achieving its target of saving biodiversity and climate.
Overall, this study can become a consideration in efforts to reduce coal production and stop the expansion of the mined area to support achieving the target of saving biodiversity and climate
