This report highlights several of the social transformations that have occurred as a result of the nickel processing and nickel mining industries in Morowali and North Morowali. Against the euphoria of the transition to new and renewable energy, Indonesia is rich in nickel reserves, which becomes one of the important ingredients in lithium battery technology. However, behind the sparkling growth of this industrial sector, social problems still plague the life of the local communities, especially those of industrial workers, transmigrant communities, and fishermen/women.
Global economic change should not be pursued at the expense of the well-being of local communities. The author, in this report, delves into various problems faced by workers, especially women, ranging from high-risk working conditions, feminization of lowly paid female labor, marginalization, to other injustices against women. The data, history, and field interviews disclose overlapping interests of the global economy and their impacts on the local communities: from the loss of agricultural land, reduced access to clean water, livelihoods lost, to increasing economic dependence on the nickel processing and mining industries.
This report is able to serve as an important reference for the realization of social justice in favor of communities through advocacy. This report, therefore, depicting ground conditions and a series of rights violations and injustices occurring, appeals to all stakeholders to take effective steps toward better conditions for the improvement of workers’ and communities’ welfare, fulfillment of their rights, and ensuring that local communities are not sacrificed in the interest of growth within the management of nickel and mining industries.
