We’re looking for a Legal and ESG Policy Officer to strengthen AEER’s legal and policy capacity on issues at the intersection of environment, labor, human rights, and corporate governance. You’ll analyze national and international regulations, assess ESG practices in the mining and energy sector, and produce the legal memos, policy briefs, and position papers that ground our program’s work in solid legal reasoning.

This is an opportunity to work at the intersection of law, policy, and sustainability on one of Indonesia’s most nationally significant industrial transitions, with exposure to government, industry, research, and international partners.

What You’ll Do

● Conduct legal and policy research on environmental, labor, human rights, and corporate governance issues relevant to the critical minerals sector.

● Analyze national and international ESG regulations and standards, including human rights due diligence frameworks.

● Draft legal memos, policy briefs, position papers, and analytical notes to support the Mineral Transition Program.

● Monitor regulatory developments related to the nickel, steel, and critical minerals industries.

● Assess company ESG practices and review corporate documents such as sustainability reports, EIA/AMDAL documents, and public consultation records.

● Prepare briefing materials for engagement with government, donors, civil society, academia, and international partners.

● Help maintain a regulatory and ESG standards database to support the program’s research and reporting.

What You Bring

● Bachelor’s degree in Law, Public Policy, International Relations, Political Science, Development Studies, or a related field (legal background preferred).

● 2–4 years’ experience in environmental law, public policy, ESG, business and human rights, labor issues, mining/energy, or civil society work.

● Understanding of Indonesia’s legal and policy framework on environment, mining, energy, industry, and labor.

● Familiarity with ESG standards and international frameworks such as the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, OECD Guidelines, IFC Performance Standards, or IRMA.

● Strong analytical skills and the ability to read and interpret legal, regulatory, and technical documents.

● Strong writing skills in Bahasa Indonesia; working proficiency in English is a plus.

● Good communication and coordination skills with internal teams and external partners
