Urban Public Transportation Study Series: Bandung

Like other major cities in Indonesia, Bandung has experienced an increase in motor vehicle ownership, which has the potential to worsen traffic congestion. Besides economic losses, traffic congestion also causes environmental damage. The total fuel consumption for motor vehicles in Bandung is approximately 627 million liters per year, which generates around 1.53 million tons of carbon emissions annually. The transportation sector in Bandung alone contributes more than two-thirds of the city’s exhaust emissions. Transitioning to mass personal electric cars instead of public transportation is a misguided solution.

Therefore, we need to encourage the use of public transportation that utilizes clean energy as one of the solutions to address the climate crisis. The “Urban Public Transportation Study Series: Bandung,” published by AEER, discusses urban public transportation in the Bandung area, using a survey of Light Rail Transit (LRT) users in Jakarta for the development of LRT in Bandung.
